The Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands (NENF&G) are located in central and western Nebraska and central and western South Dakota. The area is made up of 2 national forests, 3 national grasslands, an historic tree nursery, 2 geologic areas, and multiple recreation sites and facilities.
Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands is an unusual combination of the native ponderosa pines of the Nebraska and Samuel R. McKelvie National Forests and mixed grass prairies on the Buffalo Gap, Fort Pierre, and Oglala National Grasslands. Unique to the National Forest system, the hand-planted forests in the Nebraska Sandhills combine grassland and forest to deliver a variety of recreational opportunities. Charles E. Bessey Nursery, the nation’s oldest federal tree nursery, rounds out the interesting and challenging combination of areas known as the Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands.
